Rare live footage of one of the first ever anti-racism songs: Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit”, recorded in 1939. Lady Day performed the song at New York nightclub Cafe Society in Greenwich Village – the first racially integrated nightclub in the United States. Club owner Barney Josephson insisted she close her sets with the song, and Holiday would leave the stage with no encores so the audience would think on its meaning.
